How to Tailor Your Resume to a Job Description

9 min read

A 15-minute workflow to improve ATS match score without rewriting everything.

Sending the same generic resume to every opening is the single biggest mistake in modern job search. Tailoring does not mean rewriting from scratch — it means aligning keywords, summary, and top bullets to each role.

15-minute tailoring workflow

  • 1. Duplicate your resume in ResumeFriendly (Resume manager → duplicate)
  • 2. Rename: 'YourName — Company — Role Title'
  • 3. Highlight 8–12 keywords in the job description (skills, tools, responsibilities)
  • 4. Update summary to include the exact job title and top 3 keywords
  • 5. Reorder or edit 2–3 experience bullets to mirror their priorities
  • 6. Add missing skills to your Skills section if you genuinely have them
  • 7. Export and save with filename: FirstName_LastName_Company_Role.pdf

What not to change

  • Employment dates or company names — never falsify
  • Job titles unless your official title was genuinely equivalent
  • Skills you do not have — interviews will expose gaps
